I also will say that when the cabinets we did order arrived, and we found a couple of things wrong with them, J.C.

Perhaps you should go in and give it a try, but then take your plans to someone else that sells the same cabinets, and see what they come up with. I cannot speak for any other Lowe's, but this was my experience at 2 different ones. Also at Just Cabinets, the cabinets were cheaper, so that was a bonus.

J.C.'s staff were very quick with the software package-meaning if I wanted to know how something else would look in place of something that was on the screen, they could change it quickly. The staff at both Lowe's we tried never mentioned some of the necessary trim. They made sure we had all the small details we would need to make the island look finished. For example, since we were going to order 2 24" cabinets for the island, they explained that if the cabinets didn't face the same direction, we would have to compensate for the way they lined up. They never were able to produce a "picture" of how it would turn out. The concept of the cabinetry over the stove that looks like a hearth-totally confused them. We were keeping our perimeter cabinets, adding a different island, and 2 pantry cabinets for each side of our fridge.

In both cases the "designer" struggled with what we wanted. I'd have more suggestions, but I think I've got a pretty long post already.

Start with something along the lines of, "What's the largest kitchen you've worked on?" While you may not have a large budget to work with, you may find it comforting to discover that one of the designers has worked on a large project successfully, and has photographs to show you so that you can see the caliber work he (and the installer) does. I'd recommend you ask a few questions when you get to the store. If you're looking for something unusual, or have a challenging design problem, you may need to do a little hunting to find the right Lowe's designer for you. There are some great designers at Lowe's across the country. They push for our people to work on "cookie-cutter" kitchens because they are quick, easy, profitable and simple for everyone involved to understand. The people higher up at Lowe's understand that most employees in the kitchen department are not going to be as dedicated as I am. While certification as a CKD (Certified Kitchen Designer) is not something I choose to pursue, I know several CKDs and can hold my own.Īll that being said, I am the exception. I attend the industry kitchen & bath show (K/BIS), and am a member of the NKBA. I've designed and coordinated installation of projects up to $250,000. I keep abreast of current trends, technology, and prevailing thoughts on designs. I have an encyclopedic knowledge of what Lowe's offers in plumbing fixtures, appliances, flooring, as well as the detailed knowledge of what our cabinet and countertop manufacturers offer. I'm very good at what I do, and always take the time to find out what my client's expectations, style, and budget are. I have 12 years experience in designing kitchens, and come from a line of custom cabinet builders (father, uncles, grandfather), so you could say it is in my blood.Īt the risk of bragging on myself far too much. As Lowe's kitchen designer, I'm probably a little biased.
